Artist Statement
I am a site-specific installation artist exploring the intersection of nature, architecture, and the human experience. My work examines light, shape, and space to create sculptural, tensile installations that transform environments into immersive experiences. I gravitate toward spaces where nature intertwines with manufactured elements or where interiors contrast with their surroundings. These juxtapositions allow me to celebrate the inherent beauty of the natural world while exploring the complexities of human design and the narratives embedded within our environments.
Light plays a central role in my practice, serving as both a physical medium and a metaphor. Whether natural or synthetic, light enhances the sensory experience of my installations, drawing viewers into reflective and interactive spaces. The monumental scale of my work fosters moments of awe, encouraging audiences to pause and reconsider their relationship with the world around them. Inspired by artists like Teresita Fernández, James Turrell, and Robert Smithson, I aim to create art that transforms perceptions and fosters meaningful connections.
In 2018, my life was irrevocably altered by a fiery car accident that left me with severe burns covering 60% of my body. Thirty-seven surgeries, including the amputation of my left leg, have left me wheelchair-dependent and redefined my approach to art. Where I once constructed large- scale installations independently, I now rely on assistants to bring my visions to life. This collaboration has enriched my work with new perspectives but has also introduced additional costs and challenges. Despite these obstacles, my passion for creating remains unwavering. My practice has adapted to focus on smaller works that encapsulate the essence of my larger sculptures. These pieces offer intimate experiences while allowing me to experiment with ideas that inform future installations. This shift has been a reclaiming of artistic autonomy, proving that scale is not the only measure
of impact.
Throughout my 13-year career, I have exhibited internationally and received recognition from institutions such as the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences. My work has been commissioned by organizations like the Microsoft Art Collection and continues to engage communities across diverse settings.
My installations aim to bridge the organic and artificial, inviting viewers to explore and engage with their environments. Through light, shadow, and volumetric forms, I create immersive experiences that encourage reflection and connection. My journey as an artist is one of resilience and adaptability, a testament to the enduring power of creativity in transforming both spaces and lives.
